Powerdyne On A Modified Sbf

    I have a 331 stroked SBF with TFS heads, pretty lumpy cam that already dyno'd over 350 to the wheels with a Holly 650dp carb. I wanted to install a stock Powerdyne S/C i just received, but I'm concerned it won't make enough air (cfm) for my application. These things were designed for a stock 302. Any Thoughts???

    It would be pushing it. What RPM range are you running now?

    If you spun it 10% over it would have enough boost but lifespan will go down. I'd be more concerned though with pushing the block more than another 100HP

    Right now it's more of a cruiser than a race car. Motor pulls really good up to 6500. And was blueprinted and balanced by Mustang Specialties in Pompano Bch Fl. Got a 6" crank pulley to slow it down a bit and try not to exceed the recommended 38k rpm limit. At 6500 rpm I should be spinning the impeller at about 37k. Not looking for a lot of boost, but would like to see some.

    Powerdynes aren't good for much over 9 to 10 psi boost anyway they are designed to come into the boost earlier than other centrifugal chargers. I would be less concerned about whether it gives you enough power and more concerned with their reputation for shot bearings, bad quality and the horror stories I've read.

    I'd sell it and find something else.

    Have a really noisy vortech V1 Supercharger available to me, but I am unsure if it will bolt onto the Powerdyne bracket. If it doesn't it will require me to buy a new bracket which I don't want to do. BTW, the PD unit has been upgraded with case vents and ceramic bearings which are supposed to improve the life expectancy of the unit. I kind of like the fact that it's an original SVO kit.

    I guess sometimes tts easier to work with what you already have. A bird in hand, basically.

    Update: tonight I managed to finish my installation. I managed to keep my A/F Rs at a safe level 12.8 and modified my carb for a blow through setup. The car runs great... and while not a rocket ship by any stretch, it has made my car a really fun hot street car. At around 6 psi it is fun fun fun

    great going;
    got any build photos?
    this was an option on stangs from the dealer or factory or svo???

    It was a factory Ford Motorsport unit made by Powerdyne. While they do not have a great reputation, I am aware that as long as you don't over rev the Supercharger it will last quite nicely. I'll try to post photos.

    Cool deal! I'd be careful running as lean as 12.8 in boost. These fords usually want to be in the mid 11's when boosted or you risk the chamber getting so hot it detonates or hurts pistons, rings, ring lands, etc.. When you can't measure EGT it's a very dangerous game to play.
