One Serious Big Block

We had this truck come to us a while ago. It was built wrong and needed some things sorted out. The cab and bed are from a 1979 ford f150. The frame is off a early 90's chevy surburban. And the engine is from an early caddilac. the motor is 500 c.i. And the owner wants as much power as we can get out of the caddy motor. So here is our assembled long block on a stand waiting to go in the truck behind it..

It took a while to get this motor built. A lot of it's internals had to be made. It is now a 540 c.i. beast. And doesn't sound like the old caddy 500 anymore, lol. These heads pick the intake manifold a whole inch up off the valley and spacers had to be made for the front and rear..

The old caddy motors did not have adjustable valvetrains so the shaft mount rockers are a nice touch..

Here is the assembled engine and trans ready to go in the truck..

And here it is sitting in the truck, and the fast throttle body mounted..

We had these longtube headers made for this truck. We did not do this in house and the truck just barely fit on the flat bed but these headers came out amazing..

And then I built dual 3" exhaust all the way back with a pair of magnaflows and some big tips..

While we were under the truck we mounted this aeromotive pump to the frame. even though it is a frame mount pump, it is quiet because the fast controller is using pwm to control it.

For this build we decided to use the fast xfi sportsman 2.0. we mounted toe controller dead center of the firewall..

Because I am used to the handheld controller with the fast kits, it did not occur to me that the usb port I would need to connect to was attached to the controller itself. Although that does make good sense. No big deal but For those of you that are going to install one of these, remember that for tuning you will want easy access to this usb port..

who wants to hear what this Monster sounds like?

There has been a lot of add on stuff that had to be done with all this power that was added. First off the brakes simply were not enough for this truck. So we switched it from a vacuum booster to hydraboost and the power steering pump couldn't keep up with the load so we changed to whole face of the motor to get a serpentine belt with greater belt coverage wrapped around the power steering pump so it doesn't slip under all that load. This has been an ongoing project in the shop for a very long time and we are almost ready to deliver this incredible Ford truck. Here I am taking it out for a road test..

    I'd have gone with a 460.

But why? Fords 460 was stronger than mopars 440 but the Cadillac 500 was the strongest big block of that era. Surely that would be the better starting point for making big power.

It would have been cheaper to go with a Ford big block for similar or greater power levels, they wouldn't have needed custom parts or the time spent doing custom. They took what could have been a powerful Ford truck without having to spend a lot of money on the engine, and turned into mall crawler with one off parts.

At the beginning of my first post I stated what this build was. A chevy surburban with a Ford cab and bed on it. The body is the only piece of this whole vehicle that is ford. The frame, suspension, axles, driveshafts, transfer case, and transmission are all GM parts. Built Ford tough with Chevy stuff. And you aren't getting over 700hp out of a 460 without expensive upgrades. LS is the cheapest way into big power today. Past that big power is big money. period.

460 you can make 700HP NA for about 5 grand or less.

Please show me your path to 700hp for under $5k

Go check out some of the long block kits from companies like Cars by Carl, $4899 where you do the work yourself and walk away with 705 HP on E85. Hell, he sells complete 575 HP crate engines for $5000. He did a 600HP kit for a while for $3500. And he's not the only one selling power kits.

Lots of creative ways to build lots of power on the cheap for BBF and BBC. Super Chevy had a junkyard 454 build a few years back around 700 HP and with patience to find the right used parts they pulled that off with $2500. Remember, not everyone is an old man or a middle aged dentist paying a speed shop to do their build.

Bud, I know my big blocks. There are still so many build threads here for me to make..

I've been building for a while, now. And that is the experience behind everything I will do and say here. And I will always backup everything I say.

Huh? I never said you didn't have experience! What I said if a person builds it themselves (like you building yours) and keeps a budget in mind, there are creative ways to build good power without breaking the bank. I'm sure you can build a nice big block for a fraction of what a customer would pay for one.

You can get a lot more horsepower out of a little Mod Motor Ford than the LS, and still use the stock Block, crank, rods, and modified heads. You can't do that with an LS or make as much power!
